London is a 3-year-old French Bulldog who has had repeated episodes of respiratory distress because of her inability to move air efficiently through her restricted nostrils and overlong soft palate. She had gotten so distressed and overheated that she had to be anesthetized and intubated twice to effectively oxygenate and cool her.
She has a condition called Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), which is common in breeds with shortened muzzles due to their genetics. The skulls of these dogs are compressed in a way that the dog has a more flattened or "pushed-in" face shape. The variations of the skull bones result in abnormalities of the upper respiratory system. Typically, these symptoms can be seen as breathing difficulty and noisy breathing.
To treat London, I opened her nostrils and trimmed her soft palate. Now she pants without effort or distress!
